  • A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, “a turnaround”) is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place over a relatively short period of time.
  • It is mostly used to refer to political change. Revolutions have occurred throughout human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration and motivating ideology.
  • Their results include major changes in culture, economy and socio-political institutions.

1. The French Revolution was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France which gives the rise of democracy and nationalism.

1. The Haitian Revolution was a successful anti-slavery war which took place in the then French colony of Saint-Domingue (today Haiti).

2. The revolution which lasted for over 12 years and cost hundreds of thousands of lives.

3. The Haiti rebels were fighting against the institution of slavery, and their victory changed the global stance on slavery.

3. These were often wealthy citizens that held high positions of power but were still poorly respected by the European-born Spaniards.

1. Greece in the early part of the 1800s was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
2. A series of revolts, starting in 1821, began the conflict.

3. The Ottoman Empire sent in forces to suppress the revolts.
4. By 1827, forces from Russia, Great Britain, and France entered the conflict, helping the Greeks drive the Turkish forces off the Peloponnese Peninsula.

  • The American army was known as the Continental Army after the Continental Congress of 13 states.
  • The first shot fired in the American Revolution was on April 19, 1775 and is called the “shot heard round the world”.
  • George Washington, the first President, only attended school until he was 14 years old. He became Commander of the Virginia Militia when he was just 23.
  • The Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought on Breed’s Hill.
  • Although the war was between the colonies and Great Britain, other countries got involved as well.
  • The French were a major ally to the colonies and there were French, German, and Spanish soldiers who fought in the war.
