India Freedom Fighters

“Sarfaroshikitamanna ab hamaredil me hai, dekhnahaizorkitnabaazu-e-qaatil me hai”

• Freedom fighters were those great personalities who blessed their lives for the cause of achievement of freedom from the foundation of the British.
• They made many sacrifices; we cannot just imagine the amount of pain, hardships, risks, and opposition they must have gone through or faced in rallying the Indians against the Britishers.
• How wonderfully versatile and talented they were!The freedom and convenient life we enjoy in the present, we owe it to our freedom fighters. Let’s salute them!

Here is a list of some freedom fighters of India.

Tipu Sultan (1750-1799)	1. He was one of the few South Indian kings to provide stiff resistance to British empire-building and sowed the seed of Indian independence in the hearts of generation to follow. 2. He is applauded as a ruler who fought against British colonialism.
Mangal Pandey (1827-1857)	1. Early martyr of Indian rebellion. 2. Pandey was a soldier of the British Indian army, but rebelled against it. 3. He was executed on 8 April 1857 in Barrackpore.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950)	1. Founding father of Republic of India who played leading role in country’s struggle towards independence and integration of united India.
Bhagat Singh (1907-1931)	1. Worked with several revolutionary organisations and became prominent in the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
Aruna Asaf Ali (1909-1996)	1. She is widely remembered for hoisting the Indian National Congress flag at the Gowalia Tank maiden in Bombay during the Quit India Movement, 1942.
Chandra Shekhar Azad (1906-1931)	1. Azad (“The Free”), was an Indian revolutionary. 2. He reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966)	1. Father of Hindu Nationalism, was jailed at Cellular Jail in 1911.
Pritilata Waddedar (1911-1932)	1. Pahartali European Club attack
Subhas Chandra Bose (1897-1945)	1. Founded the Indian Legion and revamped the Indian National Army.
Rani of Jhansi (1828-1858)	1. Rani Laxmibai was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. 2. She became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948)	1. Was the outstanding leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. 2. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
Jawahar Lal Nehru (1889-1964)	1. First prime minister of India, a paramount leader of Indian independence under the tutelage of M. K. Gandhi.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920)	1. Tilak was one of the first and strongest advocates of Swaraj (“self-rule”) and a strong radical in Indian consciousness.

Interesting Facts:

• In December 1921, when Mahatma Gandhi launched the non-cooperation movement, Azad joined in despite being just a student.
• Azad also learned archery from the tribal Bhils of erstwhile Jhabua district which helped him during the arms struggle against the Britishers.
• Bhagat Singh joined Azad following the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, after he was beaten by police officials. Azad trained Singh and others in covert activities.
• Netaji Bose ranked 4th in Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination.
