The Royal Bengal Tiger

The national animal of India is The Royal Bengal Tiger. They are the world’s most beautiful wild animal and the second largest kinds of the tiger.

The tiger is known as the lord of the jungle and displays India’s wildlife wealth.

The Bengal Tiger was declared as the national animal of India in April 1972, with the initiation of Project Tiger, to protect tigers in India.

Prior to this, the lion was the national animal of India.

Behaviour:

  • Tigers live alone and mark large areas to keep their rivals away.
  • They are powerful night hunters that travel many miles to find buffalo, deer, wild pigs, and other large mammals.
  • They trap their prey overpowering them from any angle, using their body size and strength to hit large prey off balance.
  • A hungry tiger can eat as much as 60 pounds in one night, though they usually eat less.
  • Most tigers avoid humans; however, a few do become dangerous maneaters.
  • These animals are often sick and are unable to hunt normally.
  • They live in an area where their traditional prey has vanished.

Interesting facts about Royal Bengal tiger:

  • A tiger’s roar can be heard as far as two miles (three kilometres) away.
  • They sport white spots on the backside of each ear which help baby tigers to see their mothers. Without the spots, which are very visible against a black background, the stripes of a mother tiger would make them almost invisible to the blurry-eyed cubs who trail behind them.
  • The territorial male tiger usually travels alone, marking his boundaries with urine, droppings, and scratch marks to warn off trespassers.
  • A tiger can consume as much as 40 kg (88 lb.) of meat in one feeding.
