Solar System

• The Solar System is the gravitationally bound planetary system of the Sun and the objects that orbit it, either directly or indirectly.
• The Solar System was formed 4.6 billion years ago.
• Of the objects that orbit the Sun directly, the largest are the eight planets with the remainder being smaller objects, such as the five dwarf planets and small solar system bodies.

Different planets revolve around Sun in different elliptical orbits:

Mars	1. Second-smallest planet in the Solar System. 2. Mars carries a name of the Roman God of War, and is often referred to as the “Red Planet”. 3. Mars is the siteof “Olympus Mons” the largest volcano.
Jupiter	1. Largest planet in Solar System. 2. Often known as Gas giant. 3. Has 63 moons, largest known by now.
Saturn	1. The second-largest planet inthe Solar system. 2. Saturn is named afterthe “Roman God of Agriculture”. 3. “Titan”, Saturn’s largest moon, and the second-largest in the Solar System.
Uranus	1. Is an ICE GIANT. 2. Uranus makes one trip around the Sun every 84 Earth years.
Neptune	1. It is the densest planet. 2. It has 14 moons.

• Pluto was made a dwarf planet in 2006.It is named after the “Roman God of the Underworld”. It has an erratic orbit.
• Besides planets, Solar System also consist of Asteroid belt,which lies between orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
• The Solar System is located in the “Orion Arm”, 26,000 light-years from the center of the “Milky Way”galaxy.
