‘VandeMataram’ is the national song of India.
‘VandeMataram’ the National Song of India was written by Mr. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay to praise the “Mother India”.
Originally this song had been published in the novel ‘Anandamath’ a Bengali fiction novel written by Bankim Chandra.
The title ‘VandeMataram’ means “I praise thee, Mother.
Jadunath Bhattacharya was asked to set a tune for this poem just after it was written.
It was sung for the first time at the congress session at Calcutta in 1896.

The significance of the song was succinctly put forward by Aurobindo Ghosh in his ‘Mahayogi’ by saying, “VandeMataram was an expression of nationalism. It quickly spread throughout India and was on the lips of millions”.
Cambridge scholars recognize the song as “the greatest and most enduring gift of the Swadeshi movement”.
