Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.

Types of communication based on the communication channels used are:

1. VERBAL COMMUNICATION:

Verbal communication is done by words, mouth or a piece of writing. Objective of every communication is to have people understood what we are trying to say.

1. In oral communication, spoken words are used.
2. It includes face-to-face conversations, speech, telephonic conversation, video, radio, television.

2. In written communication message can be transmitted via email, letter, report, memo etc.

2. NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION:

Nonverbal communication is the use of body language, gestures and facial expressions to convey information to others. It can be used both intentionally and unintentionally.

1. Kinesics is the interpretation of body communication such as facial expressions and gestures, behaviour related to movement of any part of the body or the body as a whole.

1. Haptic communication refers to the ways in which people communicate and interact via the sense of touch.

2. The sense of touch allows one to experience different sensations such as: pleasure, pain, heat, or cold.
3. Touch can be categorized in many terms such as positive, playful, control, ritualistic, task-related or unintentional.

1. Refers to the use of space to convey an idea or image.
2. Our use of space or proximity is a significant indicator of how close or intimate we feel toward others.
3. Everyone observes the space around them, this is called personal space.
4. The concept of personal space is determined by cultures.

1. Being late for appointments, duties, and responsibilities is almost always read as a sign of disrespect or lack of commitment.
2. To be punctual suggests that one is: focused on and committed to the task at hand,
3. One respects those with whom one is meeting.

1. Attributes of speaking which include the pitch, the tone, the volume, tempo, rhythm, resonance, collectively known as paralanguage.
2. We can understand mood and the situation by paralanguage expressions.

The 7 C’s of effective communication, also known as the seven principles of communication are a useful way to ensure good and business communication.

  • Completeness: The message must be complete and geared to the receiver’s perception of the world.
  • Concreteness: Concrete business communication is also about a clear message. This is often supported by factual material such as research data and figures.
  • Courtesy: It is important to approach the audience in a friendly and courteous manner. Use of terms that show respect for the receiver contribute towards effective communication.
  • Correctness: A correct use of language has the preference. A correct use of language increases trustworthiness and the receiver will feel that they are taken seriously.
  • Clarity: Clear or plain language is characterized by explicitness, short sentences and concrete words. Briefly-worded information emphasizes the essence of the message.
  • Consideration: Communicating with the target group (Consideration). In order to communicate well, it is important to relate to the target group and be involved.
  • Conciseness: When facts are mentioned, it is important that there is consistent, supporting information. Systematically implementing a certain statement or notation also contributes to clear business communication.

  • The first written communication was in the form of marks and symbols – recorded more than 9,000 years ago.
  • Ancient Egyptians used symbols called hieroglyphs over 5,200 years ago. They recorded their writing on stone or metal tablets, or papyrus, which is a paper made from plant fibres.
